HUBLI: This government school teacher was promoted twice as headmaster. But the villagers and students wouldn’t let him go. So much so that even the education department had to bow to the pressure of Gamanagatti villagers and cancel his transfers.
Welcome to the Government Primary School at Gamanagatti, near here. A wellequipped and model school, thanks to the efforts of teacher Y V Kallangouda.
He has changed people’s approach to education so much that today girls are sent to school. Kallangouda did not achieve this in a day. He told TOI: “When I joined in 1988, the school lacked basic facilities and there were only 200 students.
Saksharata Andolan and awareness on education helped. Now, people’s approach has changed. We have 16 teachers and 588 students. Of them, 286 are girls.” While the school development and management committee funds Rs 50,000, villagers contribute Rs 20,000.
The school has classrooms, desks and benches, playground and toilets. A DREAM COME TRUE Gangavva Haliyal, who is now a teacher said: “After SSLC, my parents got me married. But sir convinced my husband to allow me to study further. I finished my college and D.Ed. Now I work in the same school.’’
